If you're reading this, you probably already know you need traffic. And you know that ads (Meta/Google Ads) are getting more and more expensive.

The most cost-effective and sustainable way to attract customers to your store in the long run is through content marketing (SEO) . But for that, you need a blog.

The good news is that Shopify already includes a powerful native blogging engine . You don't need to install WordPress on a subdomain or pay for extra tools. Today we'll explain, step by step, how to activate, configure, and publish your first article on Shopify to start ranking on Google.

Step 1: Understanding the "Blog" vs "Article" structure

At Shopify, the hierarchy is simple but important:

  • Blog: This is the category or container (e.g., "News", "Recipes", "User Guides"). You can have several different blogs in the same store.
  • Blog entry (Article): This is the individual post you write within a blog.

Pro Strategy: Don't call your blog "News." Nobody searches for "News about [Your Brand]." Call it "Academy," "Tips," "Magazine," or "Guides," depending on what your customers are looking for.

Step 2: How to create your first blog in 3 clicks

Follow this path in your admin panel:

  1. Go to Sales Channels > Online Store .
  2. Click on Blog Posts .
  3. At the top you'll see a button that says Manage blogs . Click on it.
  4. Click the Add blog button.

Essential Blog Settings:

  • Title: The public name (e.g., "Coffee Academy").
  • Comments: We recommend selecting "Comments are allowed, pending moderation" . User-generated content (UGC) helps with SEO, but avoid spam.

Step 3: Write and Publish (Optimizing for Google)

Go back to Blog Posts and click on Create blog post .

You'll see an editor very similar to Word. Here are the critical fields you shouldn't ignore:

1. Title (H1)

It must contain the main keyword. For example: "How to clean suede sneakers" (don't just put "Cleaning").

2. Extract (Excerpt)

This is the summary that will appear on your blog's homepage. If you leave it blank, Shopify will truncate the first few sentences of your text, which can sometimes look unprofessional. Write a compelling, two-line summary.

3. Featured image

Always upload an image. Shopify recommends a 16:9 aspect ratio (e.g., 1200x675 px). Remember to edit the image's "Alt Text" for accessibility and SEO.

4. Search Engine List Preview (SEO)

At the bottom of the page, you'll see this block. Click on "Edit SEO".

  • Meta Title: You have 60 characters to convince the Google user.
  • Meta Description: You have 160 characters. Use a call to action.
  • URL and Handle: Keep it short and clean. (e.g., de>/blogs/guides/clean-sneakers-suede instead of de>/blogs/guides/how-to-clean-my-sneakers-suede-2025).

Step 4: Make it visible! Add it to the Menu

A classic mistake is creating the blog and not linking to it. By default, the blog exists but is "orphaned".

  1. Go to Online Store > Navigation .
  2. Enter Main Menu .
  3. Click on Add menu item .
  4. Name: "Blog" or "Academy".
  5. Link: Select Blogs and choose the one you just created.
  6. Save the menu.

Pro Tip: How to sell from your items

Your blog isn't a charity. The goal is to sell. Shopify lets you integrate products directly into your posts.

Don't just write. If you're talking about a "Nighttime Skincare Routine," be sure to include direct links to the products mentioned or use a "Featured Product" block (if your template is Web 2.0) in the middle of the article.

The perfect flow is: User question (Google Search) -> Blog Article (Answer) -> Recommended Product (Sale).

Frequently Asked Questions about Blogging on Shopify

Do I need to install WordPress to have a blog?

No. Shopify includes a native blog. Using WordPress on a subdomain (e.g., blog.mystore.com) is generally a bad idea for SEO because it splits your domain authority. It's better to have everything integrated under mystore.com/blogs/...

Can I import my old WordPress posts to Shopify?

Yes. There are apps like "Matrixify" or Shopify's official "Store Importer" tool that allow you to migrate all your WordPress articles, images, and comments to Shopify without losing any content.

Can I have several different blogs?

Yes. You can create a blog called "Corporate News" and another called "Recipes". Shopify lets you manage them separately with different URLs (e.g., /blogs/news and /blogs/recipes).
