The public sources reviewed identify Google Cloud as the foundation of Shopify's infrastructure. It is incorrect to describe Shopify simply as hosting on AWS or to claim that every store runs on Amazon Web Services.

The question “Does Shopify use AWS?” often mixes three situations: infrastructure operated by Shopify, an external app that may be hosted on AWS and a headless project with its own hosting. These are different decisions for a merchant.

What Shopify and Google Cloud document

Shopify explained its collaboration with Google in an engineering article about its infrastructure. It describes the platform's evolution and move towards Google Cloud; it does not justify presenting AWS as the current central provider for all stores.

The Google Cloud infrastructure case study expands on that relationship and describes computing, storage and Kubernetes services used by Shopify. It is stronger evidence than inferring the provider from a domain, an installed app or unsourced marketing copy.

These sources do not establish that Shopify has never used AWS, or provide a complete inventory of every internal service. What they do support is Google Cloud's documented central role in the platform.

Can I choose AWS or Google Cloud to host my Shopify store?

With a native Shopify online store, you do not rent a machine or choose its cloud provider as you would with your own server. Shopify supplies the platform as a service and manages that infrastructure. The store team works on catalogue, configuration, theme, apps and processes.

You therefore do not need to open an AWS account or size a database to start a conventional Shopify store. Nor should a Shopify subscription be compared with the isolated price of a server: they do not cover the same responsibilities.

ComponentWho decides its hostingWhat the merchant should review
Native online storeShopify manages its platformTheme, configuration, content, apps and buying experience
External app or connectorIts provider or development teamSecurity, availability, permissions, maintenance and data handling
Headless storefrontDepends on the chosen architectureFrontend hosting, deployments, caching, monitoring and Shopify integration

An app on AWS does not change the platform's hosting

An ERP, middleware or custom app may use AWS and connect to Shopify through APIs. In that case, AWS hosts that component, not necessarily Shopify's core. The distinction matters when diagnosing an incident or requesting support.

For example, a catalogue may load correctly while a connector stops sending orders to the ERP. That does not demonstrate a Shopify outage: the affected flow, statuses and each system's logs need checking.

For integrations, document who owns each component and how failures are detected. Managed infrastructure for the store does not remove external dependencies you have added.

What this means for speed and campaigns

Infrastructure is one part of performance. The visitor's experience also depends on images, video, JavaScript, apps, design and the device's network. A cloud platform does not guarantee that every theme loads quickly.

Before a campaign, review the important journeys: reaching a product page, selecting a variant, availability, cart, payment methods and confirmation. Include the apps involved in the order and the handover to operations.

If you are planning for a high-traffic season, the Black Friday preparation guide explains what to check without confusing infrastructure with execution. For a comparison of maintenance responsibilities, see the cost analysis of Magento and Shopify Plus.

Security involves different responsibilities

Using Shopify does not replace team access controls, app-permission reviews or sound change management. Keep track of store administrators and avoid shared accounts where separate access is available.

For custom development, document which data leaves Shopify and where it is stored. A cloud provider's name alone does not demonstrate that an integration meets your contractual or data-protection requirements.

Common questions about Shopify and AWS

Do I need to pay for additional hosting?

For a native online store, infrastructure is part of Shopify's service. A headless frontend, app or middleware can create additional costs depending on the architecture.

Can I move a Shopify store to an AWS instance?

Not in the same way as moving the files of a self-managed installation. You can build external components connected to Shopify, but that is a different architecture project.

Does choosing Plus guarantee a faster store?

The plan decision should answer specific requirements. Images, theme, apps and integrations need reviewing regardless of the plan you choose.

The useful question for your project

Beyond the cloud provider, you need to know what Shopify manages, what your team maintains and what depends on third parties. That responsibility matrix helps compare platforms and prepare a change with a clear scope.

If you are evaluating migration, we can help organise dependencies and tests through our Shopify migration service. If an existing store is slow, a performance and customer-journey audit is a sensible starting point.
