Google changes its shopping surfaces, filters and formats according to the query and market. This does not mean Google Shopping has disappeared altogether. A store's useful task is maintaining reliable product data and checking where its catalogue appears.
Distinguish Google's results page, Shopping experiences, and ads or free listings managed through Merchant Center. A visual change in one does not automatically remove the others.
What the new formats mean
In Europe, Google has introduced changes related to the Digital Markets Act and comparison services. Its DMA compliance explanation describes changes to formats and results.
Google also continues developing Shopping as a discovery and comparison experience. The announcement of its AI redesign distinguishes that evolution from the incorrect claim that Shopping no longer exists.
Filters shown to users may vary. Avoid business decisions based on one screenshot: check queries, country, device and date.
What a store controls and what Google decides
| The store can work on | It cannot guarantee |
|---|---|
| Complete, consistent product data. | A fixed position in a Google module. |
| Accessible product pages and crawlable links. | That every product is indexed or displayed. |
| Merchant Center without outstanding errors. | That a free listing receives traffic. |
| Clear prices, delivery and returns. | A conversion improvement from changing the feed. |
Review the catalogue before changing campaigns
- Check that titles and descriptions identify the product and variant.
- Match identifiers, brands and product codes where applicable.
- Verify consistent price and availability across feed, product page and checkout.
- Review images, URL accessibility and channel requirements.
- Check shipping and return conditions for the target market.
An approved feed can still be unhelpful if it uses vague titles or leads to a different variant from the advertised one. Review representative products, rather than only the overall error count.
For Shopify, the Google Merchant Center guide explains catalogue connection. For images and publishing requirements, see the AI ecommerce image process and the image-size guide.
Product SEO and Merchant Center complement each other
The product page should help people choose: dimensions, materials, compatibility, package contents and relevant terms. Repeating a keyword alone does not answer the questions between a search and a purchase.
Structured data and the feed should describe the same visible product. Do not add prices, ratings or availability that differ from the page. Google Search's product guidelines explain markup and its limits.
The role of CSS comparison services
A CSS is a comparison shopping service. It can form part of a product-ad strategy in markets where the programme operates. It is not a universal requirement for organic indexing or a guarantee of a better position.
Before changing providers, compare costs, account control, support, measurement and terms. Do not confuse an advertising decision with an assumed SEO obligation.
How to measure whether a change affects you
In Search Console, compare pages and queries over equivalent periods, segmented by country and device. In Merchant Center, review product statuses and catalogue performance. For advertising, separate budget, bid and demand changes.
Fewer clicks may reflect demand, competition, eligibility, position or presentation. Do not attribute every variation to a new filter without further evidence.
Prioritise the work within your control
Start with inconsistencies affecting buyers: rejected products, conflicting prices or incomplete delivery terms. Then improve product pages with real demand and commercial margin. A new interface should not displace basic problems you can already resolve.
If you need to separate catalogue, content and measurement issues, a Shopify audit can turn them into concrete tasks.
