A Shopify Plus migration must define transferred data and functions, integration fit and acceptance tests. Launch is one project phase; planning starts well before importing the first product.
There is no universal calendar or zero-risk guarantee. There can be clear scope, reference data and owners enabling problems and decisions to be addressed before opening the new store.
1. Define scope using real business tasks
Start with required journeys: discovering products, purchasing, fulfilment, address changes, returns or wholesale account management. App lists help but do not explain those needs alone.
Mark each function as retained, changed or removed. Classify implementation as native capability, configuration, app or development. This avoids transferring an old workaround as an essential requirement.
Deliverable: scope matrix
| Requirement | Source | Destination | Acceptance criterion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Customer-specific pricing | ERP or current module | Chosen B2B model and plan | The test buyer sees and pays the expected amount |
| Inventory | Controlling system | Defined update flow | Sales and returns appear without duplicated units |
| Content | CMS, blog and product pages | Editable Shopify resources | Text, links and media display correctly on mobile |
2. Save a source reference
Export catalogue, customers and included historical records. Also save settings, URLs and documents needed to interpret the data. An export without field meanings can be difficult to use later.
Record counts and representative samples: variant products, customers with several destinations, returned orders and articles with embedded media. Use appropriate access and storage for personal data.
3. Design the destination data model
- Products: options, variants, identifiers, prices, images and relationships.
- Content: articles, pages, collections and fields staff must edit.
- Customers: identity, addresses, permissions and communication preferences.
- History: what belongs in Shopify and what can be consulted elsewhere.
- Special cases: gift cards, loyalty, subscriptions or product configurations.
Not all data uses the same import method. The customer CSV guide details important limits: passwords do not transfer and orders are not imported with profiles. Customer access needs its own design according to the accounts system.
Test a sample before full import. High-volume variants and customer email management demonstrate areas requiring relationship preservation, not only text.
4. Prepare design and editing
Decide which templates are needed and which parts are reusable. Staff should change everyday content without code while maintaining consistent design.
Compare an existing theme, adaptation and custom development by requirements and maintenance. Templates are not inherently slow, and custom development guarantees no particular score. Test representative catalogue, media and apps.
Identify each checkout customisation's technology and destination. Shopify documentation distinguishes capabilities; a visual extension does not replace a business rule in every journey.
5. Design integrations as processes
Establish data ownership and events travelling between Shopify, ERP, warehouse and support. Document transformations, expected timings, errors and retries.
- Product and stock reach the correct destination.
- An order enters the ERP once.
- Fulfilment and tracking return to the appropriate system.
- Cancellations, returns and adjustments retain relationships.
- Temporary outages recover without lost or duplicated operations.
A connector compatibility list does not replace testing your rules. Define alert recipients and information needed for resolution.
6. Protect existing SEO work
Combine Search Console and analytics data with a URL inventory. Identify pages with traffic, links or commercial value and preserve intent. Each retired URL needs a decision, not a generic homepage redirect.
Map equivalent destinations and required redirects. Review canonicals, languages, navigation, images and internal links. Pattern rules can help prepare a map, but implementation must fit actual system capabilities.
Google's URL change guide explains processing and monitoring. Correct migration reduces avoidable errors but cannot ensure no fluctuations.
7. Validate before switching
Agree verifiable acceptance criteria and record results. Include data quality, editing, navigation, accessibility, performance and complete purchasing. Check mobile, markets, payment methods and special-condition products.
Use controlled payment and communication tests. A simulated confirmation reviews interface but does not prove charging, email delivery or correct ERP entry.
8. Prepare final import and rollback
The old store may keep changing during the project. Define how modified products, new customers and orders, cancellations and returns are captured near launch. A delta import needs clear rules to avoid overwriting newer data.
Document the change window, owners, checks and rollback conditions. Separate themes from shared data: activating an older theme does not itself revert CMS pages, redirects or records.
For platform changes, review domain and DNS according to architecture. A theme-only change within the same Shopify store does not require DNS changes for that reason.
9. Check the open site and measure afterwards
Repeat journeys without admin login or preview parameters. Verify SSL, purchasing, emails, stock, fulfilment, links, indexing and measurement. Assign incident follow-up and retain the published date and version.
After crawling, compare queries and pages using equivalent periods and segmentation. A screenshot or a few fluctuating days do not constitute a complete diagnosis.
Use this guide in your project
Turn it into deliverables with owners, evidence and status. The Magento migration and WordPress migration guides add source-specific details.
To turn that inventory into a concrete scope, our Shopify migration service can define data, design, integrations and launch around your operations.
